From the year 1939 to 1948 he was also the Vice Chancellor of Banaras Hindu University (BHU). He was one of the most influential scholars of India in the 20th century. Radhakrishnan was also Professor of Eastern Religion & Ethics at Oxford (1936-52).

Dr. Radhakrishnan served as Vice Chancellor at Andhra University, BHU and Delhi University and was nominated for the Nobel Prize 27 times, in which he was nominated for 16 times literature and 11 times for the Nobel Peace Prize.

It is because of his contribution in the field of education that his birthday is celebrated as teacher’s day. Teachers’ Day was started in the year 1962 in honor of Dr. Radhakrishnan.

Radhakrishnan was born into a middle class family. His father wanted the son not to study English, but became a priest by studying Sanskrit.

But Radhakrishnan’s mind seemed to be in studies. Therefore, he studied philosophy at Christian College, Madras. He was so talented that the University of Chicago invited him to give a speech on comparative theology.

From 1949 to 1952, Dr. Radhakrishnan was the Ambassador of the Soviet Union (USSR) and from 1952 to 1962 held the post of Vice President of the country. In the year 1954, he was also awarded the highest honor of Bharat Ratna. From 1962 to 1967 he was the President of the country.

He believed that the work of a philosopher is not just to read the people, but also to keep history moving towards the future.

Radhakrishnan also had an important contribution in the friendship between India and Russia. He was the Ambassador of India to Moscow. He was awarded the title of Sir by the British Government.

He was a philosopher as well as a lecturer of religion, he led the country in two battles as the supreme commander of the army, but under all these roles he continued to consider himself a teacher.
